WHAT IS RETINOL?
Retinoids are powerful molecules, among the most used by dermatologists, but they are sensitive to air, water, light, UV, salts and metallic ions, making them very unstable. This explains why their formulation is complex and requires such a high scientific expertise.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RETINOL FOR THE SKIN?
By using Retinol you are refining and resurfacing the skin to improve the appearance of texture, wrinkles, and uneven tone.
L’Oréal Research & Innovation teams conducted several studies in collaboration with Hospital St. Louis (Paris, France) and renowned engineering school, L’Ecole des Mines. Visible evolution of epidermisand dermis were observed over one year of nightly use of Pure Retinol and compared with Retinoic Acid. The most interesting changes were a +30% thickening of epidermisand a strengthening of dermis.
Another clinical study has been performed with L’Oréal Paris’ Pure Retinol and showed excellent results on regular and deep wrinkles. Dermatologist experts who conducted the clinical study observed efficacy for 100% of the women included in the study and an improvement in all 4 types of wrinkles (forehead wrinkles, glabellar wrinkles, wrinkles under the eyes, crow’s feet) for 80% of them. Good tolerance has also been demonstrated in the studies on more than 300 women totaling over 10 000 applications.
WHICH FORM OF RETINOL SHOULD I USE?
WHY OUR RETINOL IS SUPERIOR?
L’Oréal Paris knows how to stabilize and formulate Retinol so it has perfect bioavailability and optimum efficacy. Our research teams have developed a specific association of molecules to stabilize Pure Retinol, and this association is compliant with our very demanding policies on sustainability and environmental respect. This association (RETINO GUARD™) has been patented and is exclusive to L'Oréal.
Revitalift Laser Pure Retinol Night Serum is the result of 20 years of research. It's stable until the very last drop, it has fantastic sensoriality and is super safe.
HOW TO USE PURE RETINOL NIGHT SERUM?
It’s very important to get used to the retinol first. Always apply the Retinol serum to clean skin and after your moisturizer if you have a dry skin.
Our Revitalift Laser Retinol Night serum has been tested under dermatological control and is suitable for all skin types. However, if you have sensitive skin or if your skin overreacts to retinol or if it’s the first time you use Retinol, we recommend you to follow the “progressive” protocol we have worked with an independent board of dermatologists.
The protocol can be summarized as 3-2-1:
- 1st week: apply every 3 nights.
- 2nd week: apply every 2 nights.
- 3rd week: apply every night.

What are the differences between hyaluronic acid and retinol?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that lends skin plumpness, volume and bounce due to its ability to hold up to 1000x its weight in water. As we age, our skin’s water retention ability declines and incorporating topical HA into skincare can be a useful way to replenish hydration and plumpness. Retinol, on the other hand, is a powerful derivative of vitamin A, an unparalleled anti-ageing active. Retinol works by increasing the rate of cell turnover which helps to visibly renew the skin, smooth texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Can you use hyaluronic acid with retinol?
Yes, hyaluronic acid and retinol work excellently in tandem and have properties that complement one another, making this one of the most popular skincare combinations. The benefits of retinol are strengthened when accompanied by HA as it helps the skin to stay hydrated and works to counteract skin prone to irritation caused by retinol - especially in the early stages of introducing retinol into your skincare routine.
Should you use hyaluronic acid before or after retinol?
The answer to this question depends on whether or not you’re looking to amp up the potency of your retinol. As hyaluronic acid helps to hydrate the skin and the effects of retinol are amplified by moisture, applying your HA product before retinol will intensify its effects. If you’re new to retinol or have sensitive skin, you’ll want to swap that order. For a milder result, apply retinol to clean, dry skin, and wait up to 30 mins before applying your hyaluronic acid step.
